Teaching for success using the

‘You Can Do it’ Program

About Us

Grey Street Primary School is situated in Traralgon and is located 160kms east of Melbourne. It was established in 1912 and is one of four government primary schools. Traralgon also has four non-government primary schools in town. Grey Street Primary School is a very attractive school incorporating the old traditional red brick buildings with modern classrooms that have been built to complement the setting. The gardens are well maintained and playground equipment is bright and attractive also.

Enrolments have steadied over the past three years after a period of decline. In 2008 enrolment was 430. This is expected to continue to rise in 2009 and 2010 due to an increase in housing being built in close proximity to the school.

Small numbers of students are enrolled in the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD), and the numbers of students from non-English speaking backgrounds is increasing, bringing a much valued multicultural perspective to what is a predominantly homogeneous student population.

Changes to the school leadership occurred with the appointment of a substantive principal, Pauline Jelleff, mid 2007. An assistant principal and three leading teachers complete the leadership group. The staffing profile is very stable and predominantly female. With the exception of prep, all classes are composite groups based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). Teams are structured around these groupings. In 2008 there were 18 classrooms and specialist areas of Art/Music, ICT and Library. Curriculum areas in ICT and The Arts continue in strength at Grey Street. The school has a choir and band program as well as a Visual Arts program. The school has two dedicated ICT labs as well as computers in every classroom and 2 interactive white boards currently in the school.

The school’s motto, ‘Working Together’, symbolizes the highly valued whole school community involvement in the classroom, in fundraising and school council activities.
