Tuckshop Kid.    Pat Flynn, 2006

Shortlist for 2007 Book of the Year.

Matt is a fat boy because he eats too much junk food and he doesn’t do any exercise. Matt seems to be lazy. When he ran more than 2 laps he blacked out. He gets his Mum to write notes so that he doesn’t have to do Phys. Ed. He is not a healthy boy and his doctor thinks he may have type 2 diabetes. His mother gives him lunch money everyday and doesn’t care what he is buying. He doesn’t bring sandwiches and he never eats fruit or vegetables. This book is something you can learn from because it shows you what could happen if you eat too much junk food.

This was a lesson that you shouldn’t buy unhealthy things at the tuckshop. It was an enjoyable story to read. We learnt never to run on a full stomach and what will happen if you get fat. If you get really fat you might get diabetes type 2 like Matt did. We recommend this book for 7-12 year olds.

Matt is fat for his age because he ate too much junk food and now he has type 2 diabetes. He always has takeaways for tea. His Mum doesn’t cook for him because she’s too busy, so the doctor gave her a cooking lesson. He is not healthy and he can’t run very far. At Phys. Ed. he fainted. He likes Kayla but she is only nice to him because she wants his money at the tuckshop. People come to Matt with their lunch money and without looking at the menu he tells them what they can buy for that price. It’s funny when he has to have a urine test.

The story teaches us how important it is to eat healthy and how hurt people can feel when they are teased. The jokes were funny and so was some of the teasing. It was a little bit rude, but it’s made up so we can laugh. The book keeps you guessing and wanting to read more. We wanted to read on to see if Matt could lose some weight.

This was an interesting book because he was friends with another kid who was chubby too and then a new kid came. Then teasing happened because the Tuckshop Kid was chubby. This book may influence other kids to improve their health. We were able to laugh at them and their jokes. If a bully read this they might see how other people feel. It’s a great book that lots of people will like.

I think that the Tuckshop Kid was a fantastic book. It was about a boy named Matt who was obese and everyone teased him. One day Matt and his class had to run a couple of laps of the oval and when he was running his 4th lap he passed out. His mother came and took him to the doctors and he found out that he had diabetes.
